AfterPartyPod: Surviving Self-Harm with Christina Beck
Filmmaker Christina Beck’s looks may be deceiving: a picture perfect blonde, Beck grew up in the San Fernando Valley and quit high school to became a punk rocker scenester after a crazy night out in Hollywood seeing the band The Cramps. An all-girl rap band called Toe Jam followed, as did acting roles in numerous Penelope Spheeris movies, including Suburbia and The Boys Next Door. Now she’s acting in something even more personal: Perfection, a movie she also wrote and directed. Perfection deals not only with substance abuse (the mother character imbibes plenty) but also narcissism (the mother character’s got that covered) and self-harm (Kristabelle, the character Beck plays, uses self-harm as a way to cope with those other two factors). Now sober, Beck talks about her month of doing heroin in London, blowing off the high school sorority for the punk rock scene, her own experiences with self-harm and the 10-year journey to get Perfection to the screen, among many other topics.
Christina speaks candidly about the journey that lead her to…PERFECTION!

IFP‘s Sneak preview screening of PERFECTION was great! Time Warner and SAG Indie sponsored the event and it was so incredible to see the entire film on the big screen! Rose Vincelli and Amy Dotson of IFP put this evening together and it was such a treat to come to NY and watch the film with an audience.

ADR session at Todd AO Hollywood! We spent a lovely, rainy afternoon with the generous and talented folks at Todd AO yesterday.

It was so great to see Jahmela Biggs (Bobbie) and know that Perfection’s post is s moving forward!
PERFECTION won the Adrienne Shelly foundation‘s female directing grant! What an honor to be included in such an admiral pool of female directors! Adrienne Shelly was and still is an inspiration to me as she not only wrote and directed but also acted in her films which is still very rare in our business. It’s women like Adrienne who have risked being all of who they are that gives me courage and a responsibility to do the same.
Andy Ostroy is also an inspiration in his kind and generous spirit supporting female filmmakers and celebrating the works of his beautiful and talented late wife, Adrienne Shelly. The grant was presented at a screening for SERIOUS MOONLIGHT a film Adrienne wrote and Cheryl Hines directed. I was humbled by the love and connection from the NY Independent film community as they showed up for this event. Thank you again IFP for making all of this possible!

Our friend and fellow IFP filmmaker alumni Ron Eyal took these pics at the Chelsea Cinema in New York !
It’s so much fun to see PERFECTION on the big screen!
The four, the proud….Banned in NEW YORK! Our film, PERFECTION along with 3 other lab projects, The Tested, Au Pair Kansas and Wanderlust were banned from the outdoor screening for IFP’s Independent film week. The state park felt our films were a bit to racy for the general public and we decided to take it as a compliment!
IFP is screening a clip from PERFECTION in New York this week!
Penelope Spheeris is on board!

The LA Greek film festival honored director Penelope with a special tribute and screening of Suburbia her first narrative feature and my first film as an actress!

It was a great night seeing old friends and celebrating a female filmmaker who has paved the way for all of us!

We are so thrilled that Penelope agreed to play a role in Perfection! It means so much to me to have her support and this whole experience is very full circle.
Very much excited to see what looks to be an amazing movie! All the best to the cast and crew of this production!
Ira.
Look forward to seeing you tonight! Love and Blessings, Lindy
